STATS: Eriksen's improvement in front of goal

As Ed Smith said so eloquently on the Twitter machine, Christian Eriksen would do quite well at a particular Dublin nightclub.

On a weekly basis, the Tottenham attacking midfielder seems to score the winner for his club and it was no different at the weekend when he popped up late on to break Sunderland hearts.

Last season, the jury was still out on the Dane, although he would not have been on the list of disappointing transfers made by Spurs.

But Eriksen has really come on this season alongside the home-grown crop of Harry Kane and Ryan Mason.

The stats are clear about his improvement in front of goal. He has netted eight times in 2014/15 so far, one more than he managed in the entirety of last season and - as the Squawka graphic shows - the goals have often come from a similar zone just outside the box.

However, it's not like his shot-to-goal conversion rate has jumped hugely. It was a healthy 21 per cent last season and has only risen to 24 per cent. That compares favourably with an excellent finisher like Kane who operates on a rate of 22 per cent of shots finding the back of the net.

Three more goals and he will surpass his highest tally for a league season at Ajax, where he struck 10 times in the 2012/13 season.

His ability to score late goals seems to have been a result of the intense training sessions Tottenham underwent under Mauricio Pochettino in the summer, which are paying dividends for Spurs.

But what is clear from Eriksen's perspective is positioning, accuracy and composure on the edge of the box.
