Europa League roundup: Liverpool fail to sparkle against Augsburg while Gary Neville's Valencia soar

Manchester United suffered a worrying defeat, Liverpool failed to find the back of the net, and Spurs got a precious away goal.

FC Midtjylland 2-1 Manchester United

Louis van Gaal will find himself under renewed pressure after suffering an unlikely defeat to the Danish champions. Despite the loss, the travelling fans still found some humour in the situation.

Fiorentina 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

A draw and an away goal meant that it wasn't a bad night's work for Spurs, who may have been expected to field a weak team in this competition and concentrate on keeping their title charge alive.

A Nacer Chadli penalty after Ben Davies was tripped in the area by Nenad Tomovic saw Mauricio Pochettino's side take the lead in the first half, but La Viola pulled one back in the second through Federico Bernardeschi, whose speculative effort from distance clipped off Ryan Mason and looped of Michel Vorm in the Spurs' goal.

Augsburg 0-0 Liveprool

Despite some nice passages of play and smart exchanges of passes between the Liverpool front line at times, they failed to find the back of the net against Augsburg away from home.

The good news was the return of Daniel Sturridge, who looked slightly sluggish at times, but was still linking up well with Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho, something which would have pleased boss Jurgen Klopp.

However, they were lucky not to concede at least once, with a Ji Dong-Won effort in the closing stages hitting the post, and a shot deflecting off Caiuby and somehow staying out earlier in the half.

Gary Neville's luck may be turning after a stunning display from his Valencia team against Rapid Wien. They blitzed their opposition in the first half, and with just 35 minutes on the clock, they were already five goals to the good.

The 20-year-old Santi Mina was on target twice, and set up another for Alvaro Negredo to get a confidence boosting goal, while Dani Parejo and Andre Gomes also registered. The scoring was capped off late in the second half by Rodrigo, who added the sixth and provided the reaction that Neville has been asking for in recent weeks.

Porto were beaten 2-0 by Borussia Dortmund, as Lukasz Piszczek got them off the mark with just six minutes gone. They added a second through Marco Reus who was lucky to escape injury after a dangerous challenge from Varela.

Athletic Bilbao's game against Marseille perhaps provided the pick of the evening's goals, as a stunning volley from Aduriz flew over the despairing dive of Mandanda.

Sevilla's Fernando Llorente was on target twice as they secured a 3-0 win over Molde, and once again look likely to progress in a competition in which they have a brilliant record in recent years, while Galatasaray and Lazio played out a 1-1 draw.
