Everton set to approach Vitor Pereira about vacant manager post

It's being reported that Everton are interested in replacing Marco Silva with Vitor Pereira, with the club supposedly going to speak with him in the next 24 hours.

The Toffees finally sacked Silva on Thursday evening following a terrible start to the season that has them in the relegation zone - sitting 18th with just 14 points after 15 games.

The final straw for the club's hierarchy was their 5-2 hammering by Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night.

Following talks between the club's majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri and Silva, a statement was released saying that Silva had left the club and that Duncan Ferguson had taken temporary charge until a new manager is in place, something they said they wish to confirm as swiftly as possible.

It's understood their number one candidate to take over the reins is another Portuguese - Shanghai SIPG manager Vitor Pereira.

51-year-old Pereira was considered for the role when David Moyes left the club in 2013 but the club ultimately went with Roberto Martinez - who was in the job until 2016.

Pereira has been with Shanghai SIPG in China since December 2017 and he guided them to their first-ever Chinese Super League title in his first season.

He's currently one of the highest-paid coaches in the world and was recently offered the job of managing the Chinese national team.

It's understood he is currently considering a new contract offer from Shanghai, which will guarantee he earns £30m a year so Everton would have to splash the cash to get him to Goodison Park.

He has also managed in Turkey with Fenerbahce and in Greece with Olympiakos, as well as a stint with Porto.

As a player, he only played amateur football and retired at the age of 28 and he went into management soon after.

In just two years at Porto, he guided them to two Primeira Liga's and two Supertaca Candido de Oliveira's as well as leading them to the final of the UEFA Super Cup.

With Olympiacos meanwhile, he oversaw them winning the Greek Superleague and the Greek Football Cup in the 2014-15 season.

Duncan Ferguson, who played with the club for 10 years, will be in charge as they welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park in this Saturday's Premier League lunchtime game.

Ferguson has said he's honoured to be taking the role and he's proud to be asked as well as stating that he's hopeful they can give the fans something to smile about again.

A number of other candidates have been tipped for the role, including former Toffees boss David Moyes, Marcelo Gallardo, Eddie Howe and Leonardo Jardim.
