FIFA confirm that seven candidates are to run for President

FIFA have confirmed that seven men have received the necessary support to run for the FIFA Presidential Election.

In a statement released by FIFA this morning, they confirm that the candidates are "HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Mr Musa Hassan Bility, Mr Jérôme Champagne, Mr Gianni Infantino, Mr Michel Platini, H.E. Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Mr Tokyo Sexwale."

The Electoral Committee have also clarified Michel Platini's position in the the election as he serves a ban from all football related activities; "Given that Michel Platini is currently provisionally banned from taking part in any football-related activity, his candidature will not be processed by the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee as long as such ban is valid and in force. Should such a ban be lifted or expire before the FIFA presidential election, the Ad-hoc Electoral Committee would decide, depending on the respective exact point in time, on how to proceed with the candidature concerned."

The news comes as a surprise as former Trinidad and Tobago captain David Nakhid was expected to be on the ballot paper. Earlier this month, Nakhid’s campaign team said he had lodged his papers and five nominations to FIFA to stand in the election.

All seven men have until February 26th next year, to canvass the voters in a bid to replace Sepp Blatter.
