Tottenham on right track to finish in Top 4 - but not this season

Even though Tottenham have spent much of the season feeling their way towards some modicum of form, they are still at the heart of the running for a Top 4 place.

And the number of late goals they have scored - Christian Eriksen being the main man in that area - is down to the work done during the summer.

"The fact they're doing so well late on is probably a form of the fitness work Pochettino did in the summer. That squad wouldn't have been used to the sheer amount of work that he did in terms of long-distance running and going back to basics," The Guardian's Dominic Fifield told Off The Ball tonight.

Although, manager Mauricio Pochettino has hit upon a decent formula built around a core of young players, Fifield thinks they will fall short for a Champions League place this season, although he feels they have the foundations to make a better fist of it in future campaigns.

"I would be surprised if they finished in the Top 4 this season but I think they're going to be on the right track to do that in future seasons," he said.

Fifield also touched upon the strengths of the in-form Harry Kane, tipping him for an England squad place and explaining why he thinks the academy product has become so important for the White Hart Lane club.

"He has been a breathe of fresh air and it's important for that club as well to finally have a player come through that youth system and make his mark in the first team. Harry Kane, as the Spurs fans remind us, is very much the local boy and the club has been desperate in the same way that Chelsea are looking for another John Terry," said Fifield.
