A gang of football hooligans had intended targeting the wedding reception of the leader of a supporters' group in France. Instead, they trashed the wedding afters of another couple five miles away, who had nothing to do with their rivalry.
Around a dozen irate supports of the the Saint Etienne side wrecked the buffet, wedding cake and a deluge of delph and cutlery as they ploughed through the celebrations in an eastern region in France. They also destroyed tables and terrorised catering staff as part of their violent intrusion.
Following the devastating experience, one caterer said:
'It was a real commando operation. Everything was going through our heads when it happened. We even thought it might be terrorists. They smashed everything. The staff were traumatised.'
The source added that the thugs arrived in an unidentified van before pouring out and ransacking the beautiful venue. Meanwhile the wedding event they had intended to ruin, was carried out without incident with some Lyon supporters standing guard at the entrance.
'When they reached the esplanade, where the reception was due to take place, they threw green smoke bombs and smashed up the buffet with bars and bats.
French police are currently investigating the incident.
