Football Medical Association steadfastly backs Carneiro in Mourinho conflict

The body that represents medical staff in football says club physios and doctors must be able to act without taking into account what's happening in the match in question.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been heavily critical of his medical team for treating Eden Hazard late in Saturday's game with Swansea, which led to them having only nine players on the pitch.

Since then, Carneiro has been reportedly reassigned, in a decision that has been met with surprise and criticism, and will no longer work with the team at matches or training, although the Blues have yet to confirm the reports of a shake-up of their matchday medical team.

The Football Medical Association says it backs Eva Carneiro and her colleague Jon Fearn. In a statement, they explained: "The Football Medical Association fully supports the actions of our members and colleagues in this incident who acted with integrity and professionalism at all times, fully cognisant of the rules of the game and in full accordance with that duty of care to their patient.

"Factors extraneous to the immediate medical needs of the patient (such as the stage and state of the game) cannot be part of their consideration at such time."
