Gary Neville rejects question about his future as Valencia manager

Gary Neville's first managerial appointment has been fruitless. His Valencia side have not won in the league since he took over and have now drawn five and lost three during his eight games in charge. The latest setback came via a home defeat to relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon on Sunday night.

Neville was asked after the game whether he felt the pressure from the fans who have been calling for the sack. The former Sky Sports pundit responded, "You're asking me about my position, I find this question ridiculous. It's from you. Don't put this on to the fans."

Neville continued, "Valencia fans have a clear way of telling you to leave, and I haven’t seen that yet. The question is ridiculous.”

Despite losing 1-0, Neville has a right to feel a little let down by his players, however, as Alvaro Negredo had four clear chances to score without converting any of them.

“We’re trying to understand what happened out there,” he said after the game.

“It’s our most disappointing result of the season. This game shouldn't have been lost, it should have been 4-0 or 5-0 [to us]. There’s no explanation. We were better from the first to last minute. In the dressing room, I told the players that they had to believe they could win the game.

“We drew with Getafe and Rayo, but I went home thinking we had lots to do, and after watching a game like today’s, I think we need some more luck in front of the goal, although I can sleep better [based on the performance]."

It might not get a whole lot better for Neville as his side still have to face Real Madrid and Barcelona away from home and Sevilla and Atletico Madrid while also competing in the Copa del Rey and Europa League to add to fatigue already magnified by the lack of wins lately.
