'I don't think Rooney is the player he should be' - Giles

John Giles believes Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney could exhibit more hunger to succeed than he is currently showing.

Speaking to Off The Ball, John thinks plenty of potential has not been fulfilled.

"I don't think Rooney is the player he should be. I don't think he's the best that he could be. Three or four years ago, before he got that injury, I think he was marching on to greatness and I think that has stopped. I don't see the hunger there to really give it everything he's got. I'd really love to see him making the best of it. I think there is more in Rooney than we're seeing," said John.

He also preached caution over Real Madrid's reported €80K per week deal for 16-year-old Norwegian wonderkid Martin Odegaard.

He believes the youngster's character will have the biggest bearing on whether he makes it to the very top while earning such vast sums so early on in his promising career.

"If you're talking about being a professional footballer, I don't think it's healthy to have €12M gross by the time you've done anything," said the former Leeds and Ireland midfielder.

John also believes Liverpool are in a tight spot in terms of getting Raheem Sterling to sign a new deal with the club as his value rises.

"The roles have been reversed. In my day you used to be a slave to the club, now the clubs are slaves to the player. Players of my generation would say 'good for you' because players of my generation and before were treated very badly," said John, highlighting an experience from his own career.

John also gave his take on Arsenal's win over Manchester City, and explained why he thinks Santi Cazorla needs to be allowed the have the freedom to stay centrally from now on.

But he has been impressed by their attitude and character in recent weeks.

John also said Kevin Mirallas should have "got a kick up the backside" for usurping Leighton Baines over a penalty kick against West Brom on Monday night and thinks "it's a bad sign" for manager Roberto Martinez.
