Guus Hiddink has been announced as the new manager of Chelsea Football Club until the end of the season.
Hiddink takes over from Jose Mourinho as the club fell to 16th place in the Premier League after almost half a season with the Portuguese man in charge.
Hiddink took charge of Chelsea following the sacking of Luiz Felipe Scolari in February 2009 and lost just one game following a poor start to their season under Scolari. Hiddink's final game in charge during that spell was a 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup final. The fans sang on that day to "sign him" as many hoped he would stay but it was not to be as he was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti in July of that year.
The announcement was made on Chelsea's official website and Hiddink says, 'I am excited to return to Stamford Bridge. Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in the world but is not where it should be at the moment. However, I am sure we can all turn this season around.
‘I am looking forward to working with the players and staff at this great club and especially renewing my wonderful relationship with the Chelsea fans.'
Hiddink will watch from the press box today along with Roman Abramovich as Chelsea play Sam Allardyce's Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.
The Dutch manager has a difficult spell ahead as Chelsea face a surprisingly good Watford, European Football chasing Crystal Palace and a desperate Manchester United side in the coming weeks. While it seems impossible to think Chelsea might be relegated, we will have a much clearer picture of how much the players were at fault for the team's demise over the last few months.
