After an extraordinary run of trophies from Euro 2008 to Euro 2012 - and a World Cup squeezed in between - Spain's fall from grace in 2014 was dramatic as it was swift.
Having failed to recover from a 5-1 thrashing in their 2014 World Cup opener against Netherlands, they were dumped out at the group stage.
But they have got to Euro 2016 with relative ease, moving on without retired legends like Xavi and Xabi Alonso into a new era.
Has the evolution gone as far as making them a likely winner this time round in France?
We posed that question to ESPN and Radio Marca's Eduardo Alvarez on Newstalk's Team 33 and he spoke to us about the tweaks made by manager Vicente Del Bosque.
"Del Bosque has taken the qualification stages for this Euro 2016 to introduce a number of new faces and mix them up with some of them that were more regular like Andres Iniesta or Gerard Pique," he says, before discussing the changing of the guard between goalkeepers Iker Casillas and David De Gea.
