He took staples to the head from a gun just so he could play on for the Red Devils, but it seems even that wasn't enough to mute the critics as United played out a 0-0 draw with Manchester City.
The striker was treated on the side of the pitch after an accidental collision with City's Vincent Kompany drew a considerable amount of blood. Viewers however, were more preoccupied with his goalless performance and the anonymity of his play.

It was a lackluster affair with City profiting something out of it by using the solitary point to go top of the Premier League table in their third 0-0 meeting with United in competitive history. But it wasn't just Rooney who couldn't impose himself on proceedings. Wilfried Bony failed to step up as an adequate replacement for Sergio Aguero while Yaya Toure had a forgettable outing at number 10.

Jesse Lingard rattled the crossbar and Joe Hart parried away a Chris Smalling shot to keep the sides locked in a stalemate and aside from a Juan Mata penalty appeal, this game lacked energy and intent.
But alas, the wounded Wayne Rooney was the unfortunate one to receive the cutting remarks from online commentators.
Hi @WayneRooney. Can you do us all a favour and go back to Everton? Thanks.
