Ireland drawn with Spain in quest for European Championships

The Ireland Women's side have been paired with Spain in Group 2 for Euro 2017 qualification.

Sue Ronan's side have also drawn Finland, Portugal and Macedonia in their group.

The team will be looking to reach the tournament finals for the first time in their history.

The 2017 Championships will be the first with 16 sides, and the expanded format has trickled its way down to the qualifiers.

The eight group winners and the six best runners-up will join the hosts, the Netherlands, in the final tournament.

The other two runners-up will face each other in a play off in October 2016 for the final spot in the tournament.

Qualification matches for Euro 2017 begin later this year on September 14th.

Ireland captain Emma Byrne took to twitter this morning to give her preferences for the draw, and will be pleased to avoid Germany, France and Sweden.
