Ireland are still in the race for France 2016 after a bailout goal from Shane Long in the final minutes of Ireland's home game against Poland this evening.

It was Salwomir Pesko with Poland's goal after 25 minutes, after Robbie Brady lost possession of the ball.

It was an altogether disappointing first half from Ireland, but they found fresh energy reserves late in the game and started piling on the pressure against the visitors. 

It was not until the first minute of additional time that Ireland managed an equaliser. The vital goal came courtesy of Shane Long after a corner to the back post, with the substitute hitting it home.

Five minutes of added time left some hope of a final decisive goal, but it was not to be. Final score at the Aviva was Ireland 1-1 Poland.

Poland remain top of the group with 11 points, followed by Germany and Scotland on ten each. Ireland are in fourth with eight points, but they still have a chance to qualify in what is looking to be a very close Group D.

Ireland are next set to play Scotland on 13th June.
