Irish fans to be given award by the Mayor of Paris

It looks like Ireland's fans have stolen the hearts of the French public.

The green army set up camp in Paris, Bordeaux, Lille and Lyon throughout the tournament, but it looks they the greatest impact was felt in the French capital.

According to the French newspaper L'Equipe, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is to award the Medal of the City of Paris to the Irish fans for their "sportsmanship" throughout the tournament.

The supporters were "exemplary in their sportsmanship," and helped create an "atmosphere" in Paris according to Mayor Hidalgo.

Irish President Michael D. Higgins has been formally notified of the award by the Parisian Mayor. It has not yet been decided when the medal will be handed over.

Previous winners of the medal include the tennis player Rafael Nadal and the actress Jane Fonda.
