"It puts things into perspective" - Martin O'Neill sends well wishes to Liam Miller

Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill says Liam Miller’s illness offers a new perspective on life.

The former Celtic midfielder is reportedly receiving treatment for an illness widely reported to be cancer.

The 36-year-old began his career under O’Neill at Parkhead, scoring two goals in 26 appearances before joining Manchester United.

He won 21 caps for Ireland between 2004 and 2009, in a career that saw him represent Celtic, Manchester United, Leeds United, Sunderland and Cork City among others.

David Meyler says he is at the forefront of the players minds ahead of their play-off match against Denmark.

"Obviously we heard the news, we're unsure about the details, but our thoughts go out to his family and we're just thinking about him and we just hope he can pull through and he's strong. That's from the whole team and everyone."

"I gave him his debut and he played wonderfully well in a Champions League game one evening, he was absolutely outstanding."

"The news, we heard about it just recently, we didn't know how bad it was. All our thoughts go out to them. A very young man, 36 years of age, it puts things in perspective anyway."
