In a vote on Thursday, Derry City and Strabane District Council passed a motion to have the official city name from Londonderry to Derry.
Despite opposition from some unionist politicians, the council will write to the environment minister Mark H Durkan to seek clarify how they can complete the name change.
Derry native and Republic of Ireland winger, James McClean was one person who was clearly delighted by the move:
Training finished, gym finished, Derry's officially getting its rightful name back, have a great day folks 😊

McClean made the headlines this week for a couple of reasons. Today, former Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot was given a 10-game ban for verbally abusing the ex-Sunderland and Wigan player.
McClean was also spoken to by his current West Brom manager Tony Pulis for appearing to turn his back while the British national anthem was played ahead of a recent pre-season friendly in the United States.
