John Giles believes Manchester United have no chance of winning the Premier League this season even in a rather mediocre battle for the title where no team is taking things by the scruff of the neck.
United are still in contention in the chase for the title, but have been uninspired and failed to ignite during last night's 0-0 draw against PSV in the Champions League.
Referencing last night's game, John told Off The Ball: "If that's the philosophy, then I can't see any hope for Manchester United.
"What they've been talking about Man United: they're not giving goals away. But 80 per cent of that is down to the goalkeeper. It's not as if they're defending brilliantly. Their record is great but that's their goalkeeper.
"It is a difficult league at the moment because nobody's outstanding. But if Man United were really doing their stuff, [Van Gaal] should have his philosophy really going.
"If they continue to do [what they're doing] and his philosophy is what he was doing last night, I don't think there's any chance of them winning the league. You just cannot win the league by getting Fellaini on as a sub, putting him up the middle and starting hoofing it up there. That's not management. Any idiot could do that. What he has to be doing is getting midfield players that can actually create like Modric and players like that."
John also added: "I think if it takes the manager three months to get his philosophy across, I think there's something wrong with the philosophy," he said.
