Whether it happened this month or in the summer, it seemed like Alexis Sanchez was destined to sign for runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.
But he while he'll be going near there, it will be to the red half of the city as Manchester United take pole position in the race to sign him after Man City pulled out of a deal due to financial considerations.

As always on a Thursday, Leeds and Ireland legend John Giles joined us and he voiced his view that City made a mistake by not sealing a deal for Sanchez.
"I have a feeling that he wants to go to Manchester City," John told Nathan.
"That's what it looked to me. They're the leading team and would suit the way he plays. He's a terrific player.
"I think Manchester City have slipped up here. From my own point of view, I would have paid whatever needed to be paid to get him to Manchester City. He's that good.
"I think he's really good. I think he's well worth any money they wanted. I would have paid it because first of all [Arsenal] are selling them to a [Man City] rival in the same city. But mainly from their own point of view, he would have fitted in to that team brilliantly. He can do it. I think he's one of the best players in the world and I think he would have been a great player for Manchester City and I think they slipped up, really slipped up badly."
He also paid tribute to ex-West Brom star Cyrille Regis, who passed away on Monday. He had met the former England international as recently as last week. An inspiration for generations of black players to follow in his footsteps, Regis arrived at the club just before John departed the manager's job, although they did work together a few years later when the Dubliner returned to the Hawthorns in the '80s.
