John Giles on Declan Rice: "He was the success of the night"

John Giles joined Thursday's Off the Ball to reflect on Martin O'Neill's first friendly since the hammering at the hands of Denmark in the World Cup play-offs.

Ireland lost out 1-0 in front of a big crowd in Antalya with a goal from the home side's captain, Mehmet Topal, separating the sides.

The former Leeds United midfielder wasn't pleased with the amount of changes made by the Irish management during the match but singled out the West Ham man for special praise.

"Rice will obviously play in the next match - whether he plays at the back or in midfield - I'd say he probably will play in midfield because Clark could come into the game and play alongside Duffy," he told Nathan.

"He (Rice) looks a good player - there's no doubt bout that. He played at the back, he looked comfortable - he was the success of the night, there's no doubt.

"Well we can say now that we can play him at the back - he has proven that he can do it. That's what you are looking for from the young players.

"For the young players coming in - can they do it? But, you've got to give them an opportunity - you've got to have them playing with the best players that are available to you - to show what you can do!" he added.
