John Giles on the Klopp philosophy: "If he was offered Modric, he might say 'no'"

Does John Giles believe Liverpool can defeat Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 26th?

He joined us as always on a Thursday and began by giving us his take on the semi final second leg when they lost 4-2 to Roma but still just about prevailed 7-6 on aggregate.

"It's great from a Liverpool point of view because they got through. But I'd say it was typical Liverpool," he said of the result.

"Because brilliant going forward, no emphasis on defending. It's 7-6 on aggregate, 7-6 in a semi final. It's unbelievable. And looking like they're home and dry and then, they concede another couple of goals again like they did last week."

Aside from the high tempo style, John also believes a lack of midfield controller is at the root of Liverpool's unbalanced showings, meaning they are reliant on their front three to provide the magic.

But he also believes that manager Jurgen Klopp may not want to have the type of midfielder who slows things down.

"If he was offered Modric, he might say 'no' because he might be slowing it down too much for him. He just mightn't want to do it because that's what he believes in," said John, adding that Klopp's Borussia Dortmund side did not feature a quintessential midfield general.

"Whether he believes in getting a player in like that, I don't know but I can only go on my experience playing."
