John Giles on Spurs: They could end up like Arsenal

John Giles believes Tottenham are running the risk of turning into Arsenal if they don't break their wage structure in the near future.

The former Ireland international was speaking on Off the Ball ahead of the new Premier League season.

Danny Rose made some controversial comments about the Tottenham hierarchy and how they go about their business - with the new season beginning on Friday.

Speaking to Ger Gilroy on Thursday Night Football, Giles said: "If you do what Levy is trying to do at Spurs and have a cap on wages - you're going back to the Arsenal era under Wenger where he lost player after player after player because players will get more money elsewhere.

"And what Rose is saying now, because he knows what Kyle (Walker) is getting in my opinion, 'I want what I'm worth'.

"Now he's being a bit contradictory in his statements because he's saying in one breadth that Barkley should come to Spurs because Pochettino will make him a better player but he won't be getting the wages. He's saying he should be moving because he's not getting what he should be getting money-wise.

"So I think what's happened is definitely that Kyle Walker has told him what he's getting and he's saying 'well I'm 27 now, I'm going to do what a lot of other player do and want a move'. And what he has done, which I think is right, is say that all the players at Spurs are being underpaid - which they are.

"If you take, if there's a cap of 100 grand a week on it which is a lot of money, Harry Kane is an outstanding player, if he went on the transfer market today - he's going to be going for 150/190...that's what Levy would be looking for. But, at the same time, he's only paying him 100 grand per week. It's all right putting a cap in place but you're going to lose players," he added.

Giles also discussed Conte' s unhappiness at Chelsea and the other contenders for the Premier League title. The full podcast can be heard here:
