What's Kenny Cunningham making of Sam Allardyce to Everton?

As the BBC's Phil McNulty told us on Monday, the cards have found themselves stacked in Sam Allardyce's favour as he takes charge at Everton.

Given that the club courted other managers like Watford's Marco Silva before returning for Allardyce's services of course.

Big Sam will now take charge on an 18 month deal with the immediate remit of guiding the club as far from the relegation zone as possible this season.

"I think the club views this as a short term appointment. Sam Allardyce is no fool and I think he knows that as well. But I think he's prepared to take it," said former Ireland defender Kenny Cunningham as he joined us to give his take on Allardyce taking charge at Goodison Park.

"I don't really think it's a big risk from his point of view. I think he feels that if he keeps them up, his reputation will be enhanced and he'll be in a good position to bounce into another job at the start of next season. Financially they've obviously made it worth his while. I think he'll have himself covered with that 18 month contract, if they do get rid of him next summer, again I think there'll be a lump sum payment to him. He might even put a get-out clause himself. He might insist on a get-out clause himself next summer, so I think the length of the contract you can take with a pinch of salt these days. There's so many break-out clauses etc in people's contracts."

Big Sam has a reputation for keeping his teams out of trouble but does he have the required personnel to do so at Everton in the short term pre-January?

"The squad at the moment when they're playing somewhere near their best and I'm talking individually more so than the collective, if they're getting near the best out of those players, absolutely they're more than capable of staying up but these players have been so far off their best," said Kenny.
