Kenny Cunningham on "bolder" Irish team to face Bosnia and gives Hendrick the nod over Whelan

Kenny Cunningham wants to see Martin O'Neill field a starting lineup that reflects Ireland's likely need for an away goal in the Euro 2016 playoff first leg against Bosnia.

The former Ireland defender joined us on Off The Ball tonight ahead of Friday's crucial clash and is looking to get on the front foot.

"I think we need to score, if I'm being honest, so I'd like to see that reflected in terms of the team Martin puts on the pitch," he said.

"For me Wes plays at No 10. I know Martin hasn't started him in an away fixture. But for me, Wes plays behind the central striker and then you have a decision about the midfield two. And whereas, at the start of this campaign, I would have always leaned towards James McCarthy and Glenn Whelan, for me I'd like to see us get on the front foot. I'd like to see us be a bit bolder in our approach and a bit more adventurous. I looked at Jeff Hendrick during this qualifying campaign and he's got better, he's got stronger and he's looking more comfortable at this level. For this particular game, even away from home, when the priority for me is to get on the front foot and to score and win this game if we can, for me Jeff Hendrick probably gets the nod over Glenn Whelan in that central midfield position."

As for details of the selection, Kenny wants to see Robbie Brady further forward on the "left of a front three", believes Stephen Ward is the best option at left-back, and has tipped Marc Wilson at centre-back to deal with Edin Dzeko's aerial threat.

He also professed himself a fan of Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark.

But in terms of the overall approach, Kenny reckons Ireland should have nothing to fear and that we have the players to do some damage: "We shouldn't be frightened of [this team]. We can really go and cause this team problems. We can go and score. Forget about going there and keeping a clean sheet. A 0-0 result over there is not a particularly good result for us."
