League of Ireland player publicly apologises to teammates and fans

Sligo Rovers defender Alan Keane has made the unusual step of making a public apology to his teammates and fans of the club.

The Galway native is one of the longest serving members of the squad after joining from Galway United in 2009. The club face Keane's former club this Saturday evening in a crucial game for both sides.

The reason for the apology is unknown but it comes on the back of a testing period for the club which saw Owen Heary lose his job as manager of the club. Joseph Ndo is expected to be in charge for this weekends clash as he has done for the past two league games.

In a statement released on the clubs website, Keane said;

"The next few weeks are vital in the club's history and like all my team mates and the fans I would like to be part of it.

Unfortunately there has been an incident on my behalf and I'm sincerely sorry for the unwanted headlines which let my team mates, staff and club down.

Hoping that I get a chance to redeem myself and I apologise for any hurt it may have caused during this difficult time where unity is key.

I feel that Saturday could be a new start for all of us.

We are Sligo Rovers

Keano"

Owen Heary spoke to Off The Ball on Tuesday night about the nature of his departure and the challenges Rovers face:
