LOOK: The greatest Irish Manchester XI

This afternoon's Manchester derby will be live on Off The Ball and promises to be an defining match in both clubs' seasons.

Dave McIntyre will be joined on Newstalk by Kevin Kilbane at Old Trafford - and you can enjoy a full preview of this weekend's big one here.

Irish interest will be confined to the stands and the commentary box as no Boys In Green will feature on the field, leaving us to delve into the archives for an connection.

As is often the case with these searches, one thing leads to another and before you know it you're picking your best ever combined team and leaving yourself wide open for abuse and ridicule.

So here goes:

Goalkeeper: Shay Given.

Hard to look past Shay. Even harder to score past the Donegal man.

Honourable mention: Tommy Breen.

Defence: John O'Shea, Mick McCarthy, Richard Dunne, Denis Irwin.

The most controversial line ... difficult to justify omitting Johnny Carey here but this is an inexact science not exclusive to legendary status. Mick McCarthy's enormous influence on Irish football can't be ignored - and we needed to get a few Sky Blue jerseys filled for balance and diplomacy.

(Very) honourable mentions: Terry Phelan, Kevin Moran, Noel Cantwell, Johnny Carey.

Midfield: John Giles, Roy Keane, Paul McGrath, Liam Whelan.

We always liked Paul McGrath in midfield. No arguments with the rest.

Honourable mentions: Stephen Ireland, Ashley Grimes, Darron Gibson.

Attack: Frank Stapleton, Niall Quinn.

Neither United nor City ever play the USSR so Don's benched.

Honourable mentions: Don Givens.
