Louis van Gaal offered to resign after Southampton defeat

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal offered to resign on Saturday evening after Manchester United's 1-0 loss to Southampton it has been revealed.

The Dutch manager spoke to United's Executive Vice-Chairman Ed Woodward offering his resignation before being talked out of making the decision immediately. Van Gaal is due back at United's training complex today after spending the weekend in The Netherlands at a family event.

United lost for the sixth time in the Premier League this season as debutant Charlie Austin gave Southampton a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. After the game, van Gaal and his side were booed off by the fans and he admitted post-match that he has failed to live up to the fans' expectations.

Should van Gaal leave in the coming days, United would have adequate time to find a replacement ahead of their next league game. The team are in FA Cup action on Friday night against Derby County before a league clash against Stoke City on February 2nd.

According to weekend reports, Jose Mourinho wrote to the club outlining why he should be considered to replace van Gaal should the Dutch manager leave. Ryan Giggs is expected to stay at Old Trafford should the 68-year-old leave and may act as a caretaker manager, in a similar way he did following David Moyes' sacking.
