"It's just a very surprising deal for Manchester City" - Exploring the Girona FC connection

For the first time in their 87 year history, Girona FC are playing in La Liga.

But the Catalan club has piqued the interest of observers here due to their links with Manchester City.

City Football Group owns just under a 45% stake in the club and almost half a dozen members of their first team squad are on loan from Man City.

In addition, football agent Pere Guardiola, who is the brother of Man City manager Pep Guardiola, is part of a group that also has a stake of just under 45% in Girona.

The Guardian's David Conn has been looking into developments at Girona and he joined Richie McCormack and Kevin Kilbane on Off The Ball to explain the background and effects of the current status quo especially in regards to City.

"They've got five players on loan at Girona at the moment and this kind of thing is allowed by football rules," said Conn.

"So they're saying it's good for the young players that they can send there and they'll get La Liga experience and also it's a good investment because it'll increase in value.

"But the real twist in this one is that the partner in the deal, who is buying the other 44% is Pep Guardiola's brother and his agent, who is also a players' agent. So he's an agent for players who's now buying 44% of Girona with Manchester City Group buying the other 44% and that's Pere Guardiola. It's just a very surprising deal for Manchester City to get involved with I think."

It adds to the portfolio of clubs under the auspices of City Football Group across many continents including Melbourne City FC and New York City FC.

But it's the purchase price in the Girona deal that is also quite interesting according to Conn.

"I just found it astonishing that they're saying that the total price to buy a club that's just been promoted into La Liga was only €7 million. I think Kieran Gibbs has just transferred for more than that - one left back is worth more than the whole of a La Liga club and the way it seems to have been is that it was only €3.5 million or whatever 44% of €7 million paid by City and the same by Pere Guardiola. It's such good value that it's a very surprising part of the deal but that's the price they're saying it was," said Conn.
