Manchester City qualify for the Champions League Last 16 with an impressive win in Spain

Manchester City gave their most impressive away performance in their Champions League history last night. Manuel Pellegrini's side defeated reigning Europa League champions Sevilla, 3-1 in Spain.

The English champions currently lead Group D on nine points from four games. City have reached the Last 16 with two games to spare. They lie six points ahead of Sevilla and cannot be overtaken by the Spanish side.

Before last nights game, Sevilla had won eight of their twelve home games in the Chamapions League, with no away side keeping a cleans sheet.

City could not have asked for a better start from the game and led 2-0 inside 11 minutes thanks to a first Champions LEague goal from Raheem Sterling and a header from Fernandinho.

Sevilla's Benoit Tremoulinas scored after 25 minutes to put City under pressure but Wilfried Bony scored ten minutes from half time to wrap up the famous win.

Manuel Pellegrini was delighted with the win and hopes to finish the Group in first place which may mean a more favourable draw in the Last 16. "It is important to get first place in the group – it is not crucial but it will still be important for us. Last season people said we failed in the Champions League so we will try to get the first position this season."
