Martial matters as Man United stay in the hunt for the Top Four

Manchester United remain in the hunt for the Top Four as they beat Everton at Old Trafford.

A single goal from Anthony Martial was enough to lift the club above West Ham into fifth and just one point fourth-place Manchester City in the table.

Martial's goal came when he turned in a ball to the far post from Timothy Fosu-Mensah after poor Everton defending.

The Toffees, who have underachieved massively this season, came closest when captain Phil Jagielka crashed a header off the crossbar shortly after Martial's 54th minute finish.

United pace

Martial got the goal but he was just one of the pacey options entrusted with a start off the back of the 1-0 derby win over Manchester City last time out.

With the rapid Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford joining him towards the peak end of the field, it helps United stretch the play and provide more incisive runners to stop them becoming too prosaic with the ball.

With Wayne Rooney still on the sidelines, it will be interesting to see if Louis van Gaal leaves him out of the starting line-up when he is back in contention in order to preserve the increased speed high up the field.

Daley Blind v Romelu Lukaku

Everton struggled to provide consistent service to their powerhouse centre-foward during the game.

But even so, Daley Blind was excellent at centre-half alongside Chris Smalling as United kept the Belgian international quiet.

Granted Blind only had one aerial duel but on that occasion he beat Lukaku, who has a height and power advantage over him, and also mopped up any danger intelligently.

Unfortunately, the defender had to come off with 10 minutes to go due to injury.
