Martin Demichelis charged over betting on football matches

Manchester City's Martin Demichelis has been charged by the FA "for misconduct in relation to betting".

The defender has been charged with 12 breaches of betting rules over a seven-day period in late January. Over that period Manchester City played a Premier League game against West Ham and a League Cup game against Everton. It is not yet know if the breaches involve Manchester City games.

In a short statement released on Wednesday morning, the FA revealed; "Manchester City’s Martin Demichelis has been charged for misconduct in relation to betting. It is alleged the player committed 12 breaches of FA Rule E8 concerning football matches between 22 January 2016 and 28 January 2016. He has until 5pm on 5 April 2016 to respond to the charge."

Demichelis joined Manchester City in 2013 from Atletico Madrid without making an appearance for the Spanish side. The 35-year-old has won one Premier League and two League Cup titles in his time in Manchester.

Since the start of the 2014/15 season any players involved in any of England's top-eight tiers have been banned from betting on any football matches worldwide.

In 2014, Tranmere sacked their manager Ronnie Moore over a breach in betting rules. A year before, Andros Townsend, then of Tottenham was banned for four months for breaking betting rules.

The FA released a video before the new rules were introduced to educate players over the new rules.
