Martin Lipton on Chelsea: "They've clearly issues there and Conte's not hidden them"

Arsenal claimed the first silverware of the English season after beating Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley.

The match finished level at 1-1 after goals from Victor Moses and Sead Kolasinac couldn't seperate the sides. Pedro was shown a late red card for a lunge on Mohamed Elneny late on.

The Gunners won the penalty shoot-out 4-1.

Martin Lipton joined Sunday's Off the Ball to review the match and speaking to Nathan Murphy, he said: "Neither team particularly impressed, it has to be said. They looked a little bit rusty, a little bit off the pace and with a week to go before the start of the season - there will be concerns for both managers although they will try to take the positives from it."

Asked whether Chelsea should be concerned with the lack of depth in their squad, he said: "They've clearly issues there and Conte's not hidden them. He's concerned over the strength and I think if you look at the programme today - there's only 24 names on the Chelsea teamsheet of players they could choose from and they haven't got a full squad. That's bizarre in the extreme.

"They've sent an awful lot of players out on loan. A lot of players have left the club, players who you would think will be potential first-teamers who aren't going to be there next season and it does look like an issue and it's going to be a problem. He needs to get some bodies on the table clearly, and soon."

Diego Costa has apparently been frozen out by Conte and his behaviour at Christmas last year could well be the reason.

"Well he didn't like the way he tried to force his exit in January to go to China," said Lipton, adding: "That was a big issue clearly between them. I think Conte expected him to knuckle under and listen to him and do things his way. And, if your honest and look at Costa's role in the second half of the season, he didn't exactly pull up too many trees for Chelsea.

"He scored two goals against Southampton and I think he scored five in total in the league after the turn of the year while Hazard was taking them over the line really."
