Paddy Mulligan: Being "weak mentally" costing Arsenal

Ex-Ireland full-back Paddy Mulligan feels the defeat to Manchester United show how "mentally weak" Arsenal are.

The title-chasing Gunners faced a United side which included some inexperienced youngsters and lost 3-2 in a flat performance which harms their Premier League hopes on a weekend that saw Leicester and Tottenham pull away.

"They're weak mentally. That's a huge problem for them," Paddy said on Newstalk's Rewind podcast.

"Theo Walcott was up front and it took him 28 minutes to touch the ball and when he did touch the ball, he lost a tackle. Herrera played the ball wide to the right, Varela knocked in a good ball and thanks very much, in the back of the net. All from Walcott losing the ball in the centre of the field where he didn't go into the tackle correctly."

Paddy, who felt that Arsene Wenger got it wrong by not starting Olivier Giroud against a makeshift Man United defence, also reserved praise for Marcus Rashford after the 18-year-old's game-winning performance with two goals.

"Two smashing goals, especially the header. He knew exactly what he was doing with the header," he said.

Paddy also had much to say about individual members of the Liverpool team's performance against Manchester City on the Rewind:
