Paddy Mulligan: "Stephen Ireland's sell-by-date is well gone"

The ship that carried any lingering prospect of Stephen Ireland ever playing for his namesake country again has probably sailed off into the sunset and beyond into another galaxy.

But former Chelsea and Ireland defender Paddy Mulligan says there is no point picking the midfielder even if he did change his mind about avoiding international football.

The Stoke player was instrumental as a second half substitute against Tottenham on Saturday as the Potters salvaged a 2-2 draw, having been two goals down.

Speaking to Newstalk's Oisin Langan on the Rewind podcast, Paddy feels that not only has the ship sailed but Ireland's potential has already drained away.

"I believe his sell-by-date is well gone in the Irish jersey and maybe in the Stoke team as well," said Paddy.

"Remember he's only coming on as a bit-part player and yes, he contributed hugely and probably was the difference between Stoke getting a point and getting nothing because he was involved in both goals.

"Stephen Ireland is that type of player. Yes, he can do something magical for you but it might be once or twice a season. That would be my huge concern and his attitude is deplorable because he really should be one of the top players in the Premier League. And he's not, through his own fault and antics on and off the pitch."

Paddy also added that Ireland manager Martin O'Neill does not need to have any conversation with the Cork man.

"I wouldn't have Stephen Ireland near an Ireland setup. I think Martin O'Neill would be of the same mind," he said.
