Pat Nevin highlights need for Liverpool to sign another centre-back

Pat Nevin believes Liverpool still need another top level centre back on their books alongside Virgil van Dijk to make the step to the next level.

The former Chelsea and Everton winger joined us on the Football Show which is brought to you in association with BoyleSports and shared his thoughts on Manchester United's 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League at the weekend.

"They're about half-way or two-thirds or three-quarters even of the way there but they need another centre back don't they? Roberston's doing great. The two youngsters at right full back between them that's fine and we know that Van Dijk will be okay but there's still a weakness there and whoever's been playing in the other position hasn't been strong enough really," said Pat of Liverpool who saw Dejan Lovren beaten in the air by Romelu Lukaku in the lead up to both of Marcus Rashford's goals, before the lads discussed the other problems in the rest of the back-four in the build-up to those strikes.

Meanwhile, Pat also raised Nemanja Matic's continuing importance at the heart of midfield for Manchester United.

"Matic, I'm beginning to think he's the most important player they've got. The more I watch it, the more he's killing everything in that area," he said.

"We all talk about Pogba but Matic keeps on sitting there, keeps on doing the job."

The former Scotland international also quipped jokingly, "And McTominay, I thought he was a very good player but since he's become Scottish I think he's just brilliant.
