Paul Scholes: Alex Ferguson's greatest gift? His tongue!

Former Manchester United great Paul Scholes was in Dublin today with Irish Autism Action and joined Off The Ball in studio to talked freely about many aspects of his hugely successful career.

One of the questions sent in from listeners included Alex Ferguson's greatest gift as a manager: "His tongue, I suppose. The way he spoke to us, the way he got you motivated for games and advice he'd give you was great."

He also spoke about his infamous tackling technique, saying: "I think people are a bit obsessed with my tackling. I think a lot of my tackles were very good."

Scholes also opened up about going into TV punditry and how it "was not something I thought I would do".

But he also has ambitions to go into a career in coaching.

"I've got my UEFA B licence and the next step will be the A Licence. I'll probably get that done as soon as I can," he said, also chatting about his involvement with Salford City FC, which he co-owns with other members of the Class of '92.

Unsurprisingly, some of the Class of 92 also featured in the best players he shared the field with and he also picked out the best players he faced.

"It's very difficult when you talk about that Barcelona team and your Messis, your Xavis and your Iniestas ... it was so difficult to play against. Zidane as well - special players - some Brazilians as well like Romario and Rivaldo," said the 40-year-old.

He also touched on how watching players on TV made him more technically gifted.

"Watching these players on TV like Bryan Robson and people with great technical ability. And I kicked a ball every single day of my life," he said, adding that the Neville brothers were probably the hardest working players of his generation of Man United players. He also revealed that he even lined out at left-back in one youth game for the club.

Plus he spoke about his on-field relationship with former midfield partner Roy Keane.

"It was very natural and not much communication on or off the field, really. There was never a need to be. He was somebody you could rely on next to you," said Scholes, who also described his former captain as "like the manager on the football pitch".
