Pep Guardiola insists Man City didn't benefit from two weeks off

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's hit back at a suggestion from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp they've benefited from a two-week break.

City head to Anfield on Sunday seven points clear of the Premier League champions, with a game in hand.

They were forced to postpone a game over Christmas following a coronavirus outbreak and Guardiola's unhappy Klopp's indicated that gave them an unfair advantage.

"We didn't have a break, I think City had a two-week break for Covid reasons," Liverpool boss Klopp said.

"It's really tough, it's a tough year, a tough season, I know for some teams it looks like lesser, but for us obviously for the reasons you know, it's tough."

Guardiola responded to those comments this afternoon, saying he was surprised to hear the comments from his opposite number.

"He made a mistake, it was two months off, or three months… no four months we have off. That's why we're in top four now...Jurgen has to see the calendar again.

"We had covid, we had one week and we played with 14 players at Stamford Bridge.

"I'm surprised, I thought Jurgen was not that type of manager, like other ones who usually do it, so I didn't expect that comment.

"Maybe it was a misunderstanding. If he sees the calendar again, he will realise, it was not two weeks."

City go into Sunday's game on the back of a 13 game unbeaten run in all competitions and will be aiming to win at Anfield for the first time since 2003.

“We make a good performance there and sometimes are not able to win," Guardiola added.

“I want to see my team go to Anfield and try to win the game, like day one since we were together.

“We go there to win the game, not draw. We want to win the game.

“They are always a top team. They still have a top squad, they know the process, skills, methodology, they are aggressive.

“They will be more aggressive than ever; they rest after Brighton. They recover and will be ready.”
