PFAI question whether FAI want working relationship

PFAI general secretary Stephen McGuinness has questioned whether the FAI are interested in having a working relationship with the organisation.

The FAI released a statement during coverage of RTE’s Soccer Republic on Sunday night, saying it would cover the entire €300,000 ‘last resort’ fund to pay players’ wages in the League of Ireland.

But the latest statement conflicted with the body’s previous statement which suggested the fund would be split 50-50 with the FAI and PFAI covering €150,000 each.

And McGuinness, who insisted he received no correspondence from SIPTU over the latest statement, urged the FAI to be more receptive to their concerns over communication.

“You really do have to question whether you want to work with somebody if you’re putting out statements like that,” McGuinness told OTB.

“And then last night you come out with another one on Soccer Republic and they don’t correspond to the very body you’re supposed to be getting into this agreement with. And you’re waiting for them to get back to you.

“I didn’t know what I was supposed to go back with because I never got anything – bar the statement.

“And people talk where we are as an office. We are in Abbotstown. It’s not somewhere where we walk through each other’s doors. It’s a building where you walk to your car and back in.

“It’s not like you interact with people all the time in the building. And 99 per cent of the time and with 99 per cent of the people - we get on with them.

“There are no real issues in there – there’s no problem in the building. The communication links are just not working at the moment.

“And as General Secretary –and from everyone within the organisation – we are more than open to work with the FAI. But it has to come the other way.”
