Phil Jagielka brands last night's referee as "arrogant" after League Cup controversy

Everton captain Phil Jagielka says referee Martin Atkinson was "arrogant" in the wake of last night's controversy during the Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

Everton feel hard done by as City's second goal in their 3-1 second leg win should not have counted.

Raheem Sterling cut the ball back for Kevin De Bruyne to convert, but the ball had gone out of play before Sterling was able to cross it in.

Jagielka says he tried to speak to Atkinson about the incident but was unhappy with the referee's response.

"He told me that my defending was brilliant. So, it is difficult when things start going the wrong way and they become a little bit arrogant – but unfortunately that is the way it goes with some," he said.

"If he made a decision wrong or he didn’t see it, that is what happens, but sometimes when you go and speak to people and, in such a big game, get the answers you get it is that little bit more frustrating."
