"Playing for a draw could be the worst thing we do" - John Giles

Ireland need to get out and attack Germany if they are to get anything out of tomorrow night's qualifier, according to John Giles.

In the run up to Ireland's Euro qualifier with Germany tomorrow night in the Aviva Stadium, John joined us in studio on to look ahead to the match.

"Well really all you can do is pick the best players you have at your disposal and go andplay as well as you possibly can" he said.

"A lot of people are saying 'We'll go and play for a draw.' That could be the worst thing we do.

"We'll have to show the old Irish spirit, the fighting spirit and go and get stuck in. We haven't seen that in the home matches. Germany have better players than us technically of course, but you have to get in among them and show a spirit that we haven't seen in a long time."

He referenced one of the golden periods in Irish football under Jack Charlton and said that even tactics as simple as pressing will be enough to turn out a good performance against the world champions.

"Under Jack their was no playing for a draw, we had to get at them. I thought we were the best team in the world when we didn't have the ball.

"I know it's hard work, but I think that's our best chance at a result.

"When you're a kid on the street and you're playing with your friends, you don't sit back for a draw. I don't think tactics like that are human nature. Once you start sitting back, you're in the lap of the gods. It's Russian Roulette."
