Irish players impress in the Premier League

It was a good day from an Irish perspective in the Premier League.

Shane Long scored his first goal of the season for Southampton at St. Mary's in their 3-2 loss to Wolves.

The Tipperary native hadn't scored for the Saints since last April.

Elsewhere, Darren Randolph was between the posts for West Ham on his return to the club today.

They drew 1-1 with Everton, manager David Moyes' old club, at the London Stadium.

The Republic-of-Ireland keeper's move to the Irons was made official this week after he completed a medical and agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Hammers.

Speaking after the game the Bray man said he felt the point was a step in the right direction as they hover one point above the relegation zone.

"There are lots of positives to build on.

"We were very solid and limited them to very few chances. We had a lot of chances ourselves, which means we're a bit disappointed we didn't win the game.

"I'm very happy to be back at the club. I got a great reception out there today so I want to say thank you to the fans for that.

"I was hoping to come back to a win, but there are lots of positives to take - it's only two goals conceded in the four games since the manager has come in.

"We're going to keep improving and build from here."

Elsewhere, James McCarthy enjoyed arguably his best ever performance in a Crystal Palace shirt as they drew 2-2 with champions Manchester City at the Etihad.

The midfielder was influential in the result, which puts a serious dent in City's attempt to keep up a title challenge.

The 29-year-old provided the assist for Zaha's equalising shot that deflected off Fernandinho.

Today marked McCarthy's 18th Premier League appearance this season and he's been showing impressive form since returning from a horror leg break back in 2018.
