"Relieved": 5 players and managers who might sleep a little easier tonight

A week is a long time in the Premier League and as the old cliche goes, you're only as good as your last result.

1) Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers appeared to have recruited smartly in the summer, getting his business done early and bringing in some experienced players such as James Milner as well as a bruising centre forward in Christian Benteke.

What was lacking, however, was any semblance of cohesion within his side.

Tinkering with the line-up and with the style of play, Rodgers was in the business of grinding out results and did so with two one-nil wins at the start of the season over Bournemouth and Stoke.

Fast forward almost 6 weeks and Liverpool have only picked up their third win in the league, ending a drought of four games without a victory.

Carlo Ancelotti and Jurgen Klopp were the two high profile names linked with the job amid unrest, but today's result is likely to ease some pressure off the Reds boss.

They still have some work to do defensively, but a vital three points is likely to allow Rodgers some breathing space, for the time being at least.

2) Wayne Rooney

His expertly taken goal against Ipswich in the Capital One Cup in midweek may have eased some pressure on the England striker and today's goal is further pressure off the shoulders of Wayne Rooney.

It may have taken 1,000 minutes of football between today's strike and his last Premier League goal, but Rooney is showing signs of returning to his predatory form.

It is worth noting the introduction of Anthony Martial to the squad and the teenager's quick start, scoring four goals in five games. The 19-year-old has taken some of the goalscoring burden off Rooney, likewise Memphis Depay and Juan Mata.

Sunderland have problems from front to back and were in the firing line this afternoon, but the 29-year-old will be happy to get back on the goal trail.

3) Harry Kane

Another who will be happy to get off the mark this season, England's shining light Harry Kane has been trying in vain to emulate last season's impressive form.

Today his efforts were rewarded, a well taken goal against Manchester City will do his confidence a world of good.

Mauricio Pochettino repeatedly stressed he was not worried about the striker's performances and insisted that the goals would eventually come, sentiments that were proven true this afternoon.

New signing Son Heung-min has offered support up front, but Kane will be aiming to reinstate himself as Tottenham's talisman.

4) Mark Hughes

Stoke have been huffing and puffing since the start of the season, a rousing late comeback against Tottenham in August a high point, throwing away a two-goal lead against Leicester last week certainly a low.

Mark Hughes finally guided his side to their first win of the season, a late Mame Biram Diouf strike enough to deny a plucky Bournemouth side a share of the points at the Britannia Stadium.

Recruitment and rebuilding the side has been at the forefront of Hughes' tenure at the club and marque signing Xherdan Shaqiri has taken well to life in the Premier League.

It's the results that hadn't quite fallen into place until today.

Transitioning into a team that values posession based football hasn't been easy for Hughes, but today's victory may kick start a run of good results who travel to a weakened Aston Villa side next week.

5) Jose Mourinho

The Portugese isn't too fond of travelling to St James' Park and hadn't won there in five attempts, only picking up two points for his efforts previous to today.

On the face of things, a two-all draw seemed fair, Newcastle may have been the better side for large spells and scored two excellent goals, but it's paramount to see out a game in the dying stages.

Tim Sherwood cursed his Aston Villa side after they went from two-nil up against Leicester, only to concede three times in the last fifteen minutes and lose the game.

Mourinho was without first choice striker, Diego Costa through suspension and had to make do with Loic Remy leading the line.

Two late goals from Brazilians Ramires and Willian gave Chelsea a point and will need to start picking up results on their travels if they are to make up ground on league leaders Manchester United.
