Mick McCarthy has been sacked by APOEL Nicosia

Mick McCarthy has been sacked as manager of Cypriot club APOEL Nicosia, having only taken over in November.

The former Republic of Ireland manager has been shown the door after APOEL lost their last four matches to lie 11th of 14 clubs in the Cypriot table.

APOEL issued a brief statement which reads:

The company APOEL FOOTBALL (PUBLIC) LTD announces the end of its cooperation with coach Mick McCarthy.

We wish Mr. McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor good luck.

APOEL are the most decorated club in Cyprus.

Former Shamrock Rovers player Jack Byrne only made his debut for the club last night in a 2-1 defeat to Doxa.

Byrne penned a two and a half year contract with APOEL.

It was McCarthy's first job outside Ireland and England.

He left his position as Republic of Ireland manager last April following spells at Ipswich Town, Wolves and Sunderland, which all followed his first stint in charge of the national team.
