"There have to be some big decisions made pretty soon" - Richie Towell on his future

Given the season he has had, it was fitting that Richie Towell was the man who scored the extra-time winner for Dundalk in their FAI Cup final win over Cork City.

The midfielder plundered 25 league goals as the Lilywhites retained their Premier Division crown and won the Double in one fell swoop.

"It's been amazing," he told Off The Ball's Nathan Murphy tonight as he joined us on the show.

"Just what we have achieved this year, it's what we said when we joined back in pre-season. Our main goal was to win the league, back-to-back titles and then we obviously wanted to be in the Aviva and to win the Cup as well. To do that in the fashion we have all year has been great."

Towell, who also admitted that he was "lucky to have a manager like Stephen" Kenny for the freedom he is afforded on the pitch and has studied Frank Lampard's ability to make late runs into the box, has also been linked with a move to England, with League Two Bristol Rovers declaring an interest recently.

"I honestly don't know," he replied about where he will be playing next season, "It is a very frustrating time for any player that plays in the League of Ireland. We're all in the same boat. We're out of contract now.

"I've a baby now on the way, the baby will be here in a few weeks so there has to be some big decisions made pretty soon. But obviously to come down off the highs of the weekend, it's probably only sinking in now. I have to get back to reality and back to business."

The Dubliner has had a taste of cross-channel football already of course, having been on Celtic's books at one stage, also going on loan at Hibernian during Pat Fenlon's time in charge there.

"When I went on loan to Hibs, I wasn't getting enough game-time in the end. When I first went there, I was playing every week, really enjoying it. Although I was playing out of position I was still enjoying getting some first team experience. Then coming towards the end of that period, I wasn't playing so when you're out of sight, you're out of mind," he said.

"Obviously I wasn't playing so Celtic just decided not to renew my contract. At the end of the day, it's a business that they're involved in. They can't make any heartfelt decisions. It's ruthless over there but I think it's made me a better person and it's definitely made me a better player now for all that happening."
