Jason Sherlock: "Roy Evans Wanted Me At Liverpool"

We all know Jason Sherlock the Dublin footballer, but it could so easily have been Jason Sherlock, the Liverpool superstar…

The 1995 All-Ireland winner revealed on today's Now That's What I Call Sport just how close he came to swapping blue for red, before his inter-county career took off with Dublin.

Sherlock had been plying his soccer trade with UCD in the League of Ireland First Division, when a friendly clash with Liverpool at the old Lansdowne Rd at the end of the 1994/95 season almost changed his life.

He joined Off The Ball’s Jamie Moore for a chat recently, to discuss his new autobiography Jayo:

“I spoke to Roy Evans after the game”, Sherlock said. “He said 'listen you did really well, we’d love to get you over.

"That was May of ’95, and I was going in to get involved with the Dublin senior team. That was probably as close as I got to playing for Liverpool.

"Obviously the summer took a different turn from my own point of view- it was very successful.

"Once we won the All-Ireland and the notoriety that came with me being involved and the attention that I got, I think the whole motivation was to be accepted and I really felt in ’95 that I was accepted.

“That probably took away from my sporting motivation for a couple of years, because I was kinda happy just to be known.

“The Liverpool thing- that’s as close as I got. That’s my 'I could’ve been a contender' story! But the way things have worked out over the last few years, I wouldn’t have had it any other way."

You can hear this morning's show with Derek Ryan in full below, where we chatted to former republic of Ireland defender Darren O'Dea on the embarrassing loss to Denmark midweek, Bohemians manager Keith Long recaps their season, all the information on Carl Frampton's return to the ring in Belfast and Joe Schmidt on the close call win over Fiji at the Aviva:

Now That's What I Call Sport is back Sunday morning from 9am on 98FM.
