Seamus Coleman: Roy Keane shouldn't have to tell us to keep our standards up

Cutting comments from Roy Keane after Ireland's loss against Belarus did not go unnoticed in the squad, as he called out a number of players for their performances.

In particular, Keane stated that Aiden McGeady had disappointed, adding that "you could tell" that a number of players hadn't had much first team football.

He also added that a number of the players who were travelling with the squad in the final 23 should be "counting their blessings" that they were getting on the flight at all.

The comments got plenty of media attention and have been the subject of a lot of scrutiny in recent days, but speaking on Friday, Seamus Coleman said that Keane's words were nothing new, and that the players should know they need to always be at their best.

"I don't think Roy Keane should have to say that to any of us as professional footballers anyway, we should know to keep our standards up at all times."

A key member of the squad, Coleman did not come in for personal criticism from the assistant manager, but it remains to be seen how those who Keane alluded to will feel about being singled out for harsh treatment.
