Sean Maguire on his debut: "It's the result that matters at the end of the day"

Sean Maguire made a winning start to his competitive Preston North End career on Saturday after a 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Deepdale.

Daniel Johnson scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to give Alex Neil's side the perfect start to the new campaign.

There has been some interest to see how Maguire would fare in the Championship and speaking to Off the Ball's Kevin Kilbane after the match, he said: "Personally yeah, very pleased. It's the result that matters at the end of the day.

"Every game is going to be tough in the Championship and starting the season with three points is the most important thing. Taking away from the three points - I was pleased with the way I played. You'd want to cap that performance with a goal but as I said there, the most important thing is the three points."

Asked about the build-up to the game and if he knew if he was going to start, he said: "The gaffer kind of says it during the week and you kind of have an idea that you're going to be playing  but I didn't want to get my hopes up...obviously I had that at the back of my head but I just needed to keep focused if I got called upon.

"I got the nod and as I said there, I played about 75 minutes and I was rather pleased the way I played but three points now and we build on that for next week. It's going to be a big week with League Cup during the week and the big one against Leeds next week.
