Shelbourne FC to continue to honour staff contracts

Shelbourne have confirmed that they will continue to honour their contracts with players and staff, despite the coronavirus halting the season.

The SSE Airtricity League is not set to resume until the middle of June and both Sligo Rovers and Cork City have been forced to stop paying their staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But Shels' CEO David O’Connor says last year's First Division champions are "proud" to have met all their financial obligations during the crisis and that their "aim and intention is to honour all contracts to players and staff”.

"We’re still awaiting full confirmation from the government support structures, that hopefully will be available to us to utilize, and until that’s made 100% clear, we’ll just have to treat it on a day-to-day basis,” he added.

"What a surreal couple of weeks we're after having, really hard to fathom the situation globally we've found ourselves in with this pandemic and crisis. Hard to believe where we were a couple of weeks ago, looking forward to the games at Tolka after the great start we've made but it's such an unprecedented situation that it's really time to take stock.

"We can now plan toward the June 19th, the situation is very fluid and things are changing daily so who knows if that date will come around too quickly for everyone but at least we have a date that can be pencilled into the diary which we can plan around. Every player and staff member was paid in full last week and they'll be paid again this week."
