Tottenham beat Nottingham Forest in an eventful game on Sky Super Sunday with Harry Kane scoring twice.
Harry Kane scored both goals as Tottenham beat Nottingham Forest in Nottingham today.
Kane started upfront between Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski. There was some speculation before the game that Son would lose his place to new signing Richarlison based on his form so far this season. But Antonio Conte stuck with the South Korean star.
Son didn't have the impact he hoped to have. Kulusevski and Kane combined for the first goal before Richarlison provided a strong spark as a substitute off the bench.
Son showed his frustration when substituted.
But Kane isn't worried about Son at this stage of the season. Tottenham need competition and a strong squad to last this season. He explained his thought process in detail to Sky Sports after the game.
"I think if you want to be a top team, you're going to have to compete for every position," Kane said.
"And I think that's what we've created. The squad that we have now, Richarlison whenever he's had a chance to play, whenever he's trained, he's done really, really well. And he's biting at the bit to play. Like I touched on at the start of this [interview], we've a lot of games coming up so we need everyone."
Son is one of the best players in the Premier League. He is on par with Kane as a creative, attacking player. He is also versatile because he can play any position across the front three. Without Son, Tottenham would be a far inferior team.
Kane knows that and he trusts Son to turn his form around and reclaim his spot as one of the best players in the league. Richarlison will have his role too, but he's not likely to overtake Son or Kulusevski.
"Of course Sonny might be frustrated with maybe not scoring yet this season, but Sonny is a really important player for us. If we're going to achieve anything this season we need Sonny to keep doing what he's doing: working hard for the team.
"He'll pop up with goals, no doubt."
Tottenham are third in the league. They have 10 points after four games, behind only Arsenal and tied with Manchester City. Conte has yet to inject his new signings into starting roles, so there is more to come from the team over the course of the season.
