'It was the only time in my life that I was really scared of something'

When Graeme Souness is delivering his punditry on TV, he is drawing on almost 40 years experience as a player and manager.

And it goes without saying that it is not a run of the mill career, given that it includes multiple league titles and European Cups with Liverpool and other clubs.

Tonight, he joined Off The Ball in Drogheda for our last Roadshow of the year to talk about his playing and management career.

He also said he would not have signed Mario Balotelli had he been in Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers' shoes this summer.

"I, for the life of me, don't understand why I'm talking about him. I don't understand why he gets so much air-time because I look back on his career and I'm thinking there's nothing he's done in his career that warrants the attention he gets as a football player."

Souness detailed his early career at Tottenham as well as what Jack Charlton taught him at Middlesbrough in the '70s.

Famously a tough-tackling midfielder in his own right, he also had an anecdote about being on the end of a John Giles tackle during a game against Leeds.

He also revealed that Liverpool legend Bob Paisely was not the type of manager who showered him with praise, sharing a funny story from his first game.

The 61-year-old also spoke openly about the way major heart issues changed him and left him "petrified" while Liverpool manager in 1992.

"It did change me. It's the one thing I look back on in life and that's really the first time I've been really frightened," he said.

"I remember being in intensive care, looking at the clock and thinking 'don't go to sleep, don't go to sleep'. I can laugh about it now but I was petrified."

He also touched on the problems he had during his spell in charge of Liverpool in the early '90s and acknowledged he was "too inexperienced" despite having managed Rangers for five years, previous to that.

But he explained the difference, based on his experience of having played in Italy where football was ahead of the curve when it came to nutrition and preparation.

"When I look at David Moyes last year going into Manchester United after 25 years of non-stop success, I think that was a similar scenario for me," he admitted.

"You're following people who have known nothing but success. I'd known nothing but success, walking into a dressing room where there are some absolute legends and a big part of your job is telling them that their time's up."

The former Scotland international also spoke about managing Newcastle, Rangers and in Turkey.

He also spoke about the issue of sectarianism in Scotland and how his native Edinburgh differs from Glasgow in that respect, going on to highlight how he has a Catholic wife as well as touching on how he dealt with the anger from Rangers fans when he signed Catholic player Mo Johnston.

Souness also explained why he controversially planted a Galatasaray flag into the centre circle against the Istanbul side's bitter rivals Fenerbahce.
